The campaign in 30 seconds
From brief to creator-led work
- The brief
Invite people into the experience
Detroit Opera wanted to raise awareness of Rinaldo and interest people who might not already see opera as part of their plans.
- The creative move
Make the invitation feel personal
I documented opening night as a complete night out, using humor, hospitality, and my genuine reactions to make the production feel approachable without flattening what made it special.
- What I made
Strategy through delivery
I shaped the opening-night story for my audience, filmed the experience on location, wrote and edited the final video, published it across three platforms, invited Detroit Opera into the Instagram collaboration, and reported the campaign results.

The detailed story
Opera needed to feel like a plan, not an obligation
Detroit Opera wanted more people to discover Rinaldo, including audiences who might not already think of opera when deciding what to do in Detroit. The creative challenge was not simply explaining the production. It was helping someone imagine the full experience and decide that a night at the opera could belong to them.
Opening night supplied the answer. Instead of treating the performance like a formal assignment, I documented it as a night out with a guest: arriving at the Detroit Opera House, taking in the building, visiting the lounge, finding our box seats, reacting to the production, and making room for humor throughout.
I translated the experience through genuine discovery
The final video let the audience encounter the evening in the same order I did. The ornate setting created spectacle, while my reactions kept the story personal and recognizable. That balance mattered. I could honor the production without presenting opera as something a viewer needed prior knowledge to understand.
I also framed the remaining performances as something to look forward to during winter and invited viewers to send the video to someone they would bring. That turned the call to action into a social plan rather than a lecture about why opera matters.
Publishing extended the partnership
I shared one original video across Instagram, TikTok, and Threads, then invited Detroit Opera to join the Instagram post as a collaborator. The delayed collaboration invite gave the Reel another distribution moment before the final weekend of performances.
The campaign reached more than 8,700 accounts and generated more than 12,100 views, with 111 audience comments in the reporting snapshot. Those results show that a specific production could travel beyond the opera house when the story began with a human invitation.
Detroit Opera described the work as something they were thrilled with and continued collaborating with me on later productions. This case study keeps that praise tied publicly to the Detroit Opera campaign team while protecting the individual client contact’s identity.
What the partnership demonstrated
Cultural storytelling becomes more approachable when the audience can see the experience before being asked to commit to it. Detroit Opera provided the setting, hospitality, and production. I provided a creator-led point of view that made the evening feel warm, funny, and easy to imagine sharing with someone else.
The result was more than a recap of opening night. It was a practical invitation for new audiences to make a night of it.
